| SAX-ON's
story |
| The birth of
SAX-ON (Saxophone Assistant eXtrOrdiNaire) |
|
One of the teachers who Participated in our nine
month field study on the use of the Student FHRED is a professional clarinetist
and sax player with many years performing experience. Toward the end of the
study he made the comment "Now you've taken care of the clarinet problems, can
you please do something for Baritone Sax?" He went on to tell us that he had
put himself through school on the GI Bill ( after WW II) playing club gigs. At
one of them, someone had loaned him a rather crude saxophone stand which was,
in his words, "a life saver." |
|
Over the years, he and the stand became separated
and he could never find another one like it. So, we asked him to draw a sketch
of what he needed and sent him a prototype to try. Not only was it great for
playing gigs, it also works wonders with young players who do not have the
strength to hold heavy baris. |
|
After using the SAX-ON with his students as well
as for his own studio use, our colleague took it to a gig where he would be
playing bass clarinet. Voila! It worked much better than the floor peg he had
been using. So, with his encouragement, we decided to market the stand to
middle school band directors. |
|
The SAX-ON has proven to be a tremendous help to
middle school students. Since it seems to be a fact of life that the smallest
middle school kid always ends up trying to wrestle the bari, SAX-ONs have found
their way into band rooms all over North America. The SAX-ON has proven so
popular that we have even sold the demo units at two of the conferences where
we have exhibited it. Band directors tell us that it pays for itself many times
in reduced repair costs resulting from dropped instruments. |
|
The SAX-ON can be used with any of the "bent"
saxophones or with bass clarinet. Professional players who double on sax and
other woodwinds find it very useful. It can be used either on the side of the
player or in front, depending on the instrument being played. |
